About the trip
A unique destination where the desert meets the ocean and marine life gathers in astonishing abundance.
During Mobula season, Baja California Sur becomes the stage for the largest ray migration on Earth.
This Mobula expedition is designed to fully immerse you in this natural phenomenon. Traveling offshore the Baja coastline, we search for vast aggregations of mobulas and other iconic marine life.
Anything can happen along the Baja coast, expect the unexpected!
Dates:
June 2027 (to be announced)

Baja California Sur
Stretching along the Eastern Pacific,
Baja California Sur is shaped by contrast and motion.
Here, desert landscapes plunge into
deep blue water, and powerful currents and seasonal upwellings fuel one of the most productive marine ecosystems on the planet.
The interplay of currents and localized upwellings shapes a dynamic ecosystem where every expedition offers the chance for wildlife encounters of a lifetime.

Mobula migration
Baja California Sur hosts one of the largest known aggregations of mobula rays (Mobula munkiana) in the world.
The animals gather seasonally in the Sea of Cortez, particularly around areas like La Ventana, forming massive schools. The aggregations in Baja California frequently include schools of up to a thousand individuals. Coming here means witnessing one of the ocean’s most spectacular great migrations. Find more details on this mobula ray population here.
La Ventana as our base camp, provides easy access to the areas where these rays are most abundant. You will be surprised with where they gather!
While the mobulas are our main focus, the region also supports dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles, and several whale species, all drawn to the same productive waters.

California sea lions
California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are a defining feature of the Sea of Cortez.
Especially around La Paz, where rocky islands and sheltered beaches provide ideal sites for breeding, resting, and socializing.
Being in the water with them feels surreal, curious and funny all at once. Their presence highlights the productivity of the Sea of Cortez and is a once in a lifetime ocean moment to have. You will be surprised with how chill they are regarding human presence. Be prepared to watch them forever.

Dolphins
Their abundance makes the Sea of Cortez one of the most dynamic marine environments in the world.
Pods of bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, and spinner dolphins are frequently observed along the coastline, particularly around La Ventana.
Pods in the region can vary from a few individuals to hundreds of dolphins during feeding frenzies. You truly never know what you end up finding in the Sea of Cortez.
Their playful behavior and curiosity often bring them close to boats, providing incredible opportunities for interactions.
You get a glimpse into their social structures, communication, and hunting strategies.
Let’s hope we get to jump in with them!

Other cetaceans
The Sea of Cortez is home to an incredible variety of marine life. The most commonly encountered species include mobula rays, dolphins, sea lions, and sea turtles. There is also the chance to see larger pelagic species and even orcas.
Baja is always up for a surprise!
Orcas are present in the region and are sometimes encountered, particularly during mobula season, when they feed on the rays.
Mobula season is often advertised as orca season with tour leaders pushing for orca interactions.
With the rise of Baja California Sur as a marine tourism hub, incidents of unethical wildlife interactions emerged.
Our focus is on observing animals responsibly without pushing interactions, chasing or crowding.
While we always hope to see orcas and will do our best to find them, this trip is not marketed as an orca expedition.
Encounters are unpredictable and depend on what the ocean gives us.
